Sesame oil is rich in unsaturated fat and, as a part of a well-balanced diet, can help protect against heart disease.
Sesame Oil Nutrition Profile Primarily found in Africa and throughout India, sesame is the oldest oil seed around and is highly nutritious. It’s rich in vitamins E and K and contains equal amounts of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat. If you drizzle 1 tablespoon of sesame oil on your salad, or use it as a marinade, you’re getting roughly 10 grams of heart-healthy unsaturated fat. Keep in mind that minimally processed oil will contain a richer nutrient content than heavily processed varieties.
Improves Cholesterol Olive oil is known for improving cholesterol, especially LDL, a type of cholesterol strongly linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Evidence suggests that not only can you gain the same heart health benefit from sesame oil, but that it’s even better than olive oil at reducing LDL levels. One study, published in the 2013 issue of the International Journal of Preventive Medicine, involved middle-aged men and women. After a month of adding sesame or olive oil to their diet, researchers report sesame oil caused a more significant decrease in LDL. Both groups experienced a similar decrease in total cholesterol and triglycerides and an increase in good cholesterol.
Helps Keep Bones Strong Unlike olive oil, sesame is unique in that it contains plant hormones known as phytoestrogens. While soy is best known for its phytoestrogen content, sesame seeds are also rich in these substances. It appears sesame oil may offer women with low estrogen benefits similar to those found in soy. Supplementing sesame oil protects against bone loss in the presence of estrogen deficiency, researchers report in the journal Cytotechnology in 2014. Estrogen plays a critical role in slowing bone turnover, which is why menopause brings with it an increased risk of osteoporosis.
Potent Anti-Inflammatory Effects The inflammation caused by a diet high in saturated fat is one of the reasons it's so detrimental to heart health. Sesame oil is found to possess potent anti-inflammatory activity, which helps keep blood vessels soft and flexible instead of hard and narrow as observed in heart disease. When scientists examined the effect of sesame oil on hardened arteries, they found it significantly lowered inflammation, resulting in a reduction in plaque buildup. The study results were published in the Journal of Medicinal Food in 2015.
