Citronella is the name given to a genus of tropical trees and bushes that‚ as a species‚ are known as lemongrass. As one would expect‚ the oil from Citronella has a characteristic lemony‚ citrus-like aroma that's made it a popular ingredient in candles and incense. Phytochemicals from Citronella are often used in perfumes and cosmetics. In some areas of the world Citronella oil is used as a natural‚ non-toxic insect repellent‚ although some countries still limit or prohibit its use for this purpose.
In aromatherapy there are two prominent but different varieties used; Cymbopogon winterianus‚ also known as Java type‚ and Cymbopogon nardus‚ also known as Ceylon type. The difference between the two is in their phytochemical content. The Ceylon type has a higher level of gerianol‚ which gives this particular oil more of a floral undertone‚ whereas the Java type has a higher content of citronellal‚ which imparts more of an intense lemon aroma. We use Cymbopogon winterianus for a fresh‚ herbaceous‚ lemony aroma that's milder than actual lemon oil. It blends very well with Cedarwood‚ Lemon‚ Lemongrass‚ and Lavender oils‚ in addition to other oils.
